Abhiruchi Sports Day
The birthday of The first Arjun Bhogeshwar Baruah of Assam is being celebrated every year in the state as Abhiruchi Sports Day. The day has been celebrated since 1986 under the initiative of sports magazine ‘Abhiruchi’. The slogan of ‘Abhiruchi Sports Day’ is ‘Pride of the skilled sports nation is the wealth of the country’. The day honours sportspersons who have achieved achievements in various sports and efforts are made to specially encourage budding sportspersons. One of the highlights of the day is the run that started on the morning of September 3. The country’s various fame The players have already participated in the Abhiruchi Sports Day event. Born on September 3, 1937, sprinter Bhogeshwar Baruah was the first Assamese athlete to win a gold medal at the Asian Games. Barua brought a rare honour to Assam by winning a gold medal in the 800 m race at the 1966 Bangkok Asian Games.It was because of this success that he received the Arjuna Award, the country’s highest sporting honour at that time. On December 18, 1967, as the first sportsperson from Assam and the North-East, Bhogeshwar Baruah received the Arjuna Award from the then President of India, Dr. Zakir Hussain. It may be recalled that Arjun Bhogeshwar Baruah won the silver medal in the 1970 Bangkok Asian Games by finishing second in the 400×4 m race in .
