The low-caste Kammis included the sub-castes Tharakan (iron-smiths), Mochi (shoe-makers) and Kasai (butchers). The subcaste Tharakans were ranked higher on the hierarchy, while the Muslis, who were designated to perform most menial tasks, held a social status similar to that of Dalits (untouchables).
