Teacher’s Day
Teachers’ Day is celebrated every year on the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the first Vice President of India and the second President. The tradition of celebrating Teacher’s Day began in India from 1962. The day commemorates the important contribution of the teachers in building the society and specially honors the teachers. Teacher’s Day also has a special contribution in making the sacred relationship between guru-shishya more dignified. Born on September 5, 1888 in Tirutani, present-day Tamil Nadu, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a great teacher and philosopher scholar. Radhakrishnan served as vice-chancellor of Andhra University, Banaras Hindu University and Delhi University. When a group of meritorious students and friends sought permission to celebrate Radhakrishnan’s birthday, he said he would allow birthday celebrations only if it was celebrated as Teachers’ Day. Because through this, a respect will be shown to the entire teaching community. It is noteworthy that even though he held the highest constitutional post in India, Radhakrishnan preferred to identify himself as a teacher.
