3 May
Freedom of the Media Day
The UN General Assembly declared May 3 as the Press Freedom Day. The main objective of this day is to raise awareness about the freedom of the press and to remind the governments to give dignity to the right to expression. In addition, in today’s changing and problematic environment, where the freedom of the press is affected, the role that journalists have to play is also highlighted through this day. UNESCO has been playing a major role in celebrating the Independence Day of the media. Every year on this day, UNESCO brings together media personnel from different parts of the world, representatives of various organizations fighting for the rights of the media and various UN agencies to discuss the responsibility to be taken to meet the current challenges. The conference specifically discussed the role of media personnel in the news environment, especially in conflict-ridden and terrorist-infested areas. The UN General Assembly declared May 3 as the Press Freedom Day.
