May Day
Since the Industrial Revolution a large number of workers have been needed in europe and america in view of the emergence of large factories. As a result a class of owners or capitalists is created. The capitalists forced the workers to work for 18-20 hours a day for a meagre wage. Most of the workers accepted this injustice without protest for fear of punishment. From the mid-19th century onwards, however, an organized protest against such injustice began with the efforts of Carlmarx and Frederick Engels. Workers’ organisations were also born in different places. The International Workers’ Association was formed in 1864. In 1884, the Federation of Trade Labour Unions organized in Canada and america adopted an important proposal at their fourth conference. That is, from May 1, 1886, only eight hours a day will be considered as working hours and 16 hours will be there for the rest and cultural entertainment of the workers. About 500,000 workers participated in the strike in The City of Chicago on May 1, 1886. Seeing such wide scope of the movement, the capitalists panicked and tried to suppress the protests forcibly. On May 3, the workers of a factory named ‘Makaktic Reaper’ were brutally attacked by the police and six workers died. A massive protest meeting at Chicago City’s ‘Hey Market Square’ to protest against this incident is held. The government arrested a few labour leaders and later sentenced them to death and thus tried to crush the workers’ movement.
